Friday I saw Be Kind Rewind. My thoughts? I love Mos Def. A little Jack Black goes a long way, and I wish more directors would realize that and rein the guy in. The Sweded films were great, though I'm glad we only got a glimpse of their version of Last Tango in Paris and not a full recreation of that scene with Marlon Brando and the butter. Most importantly, the movie has a HUGE heart. The entire neighborhood getting together at the to make a Fats Waller biopic goes further toward making Passaic a nice place than the new condos the developer wants to replace the old video store with ever could. An effort doomed to failure? Probably. A bit hokey, sure. But whatever. Heart- miles and miles and miles of heart.
Last night, I skipped the Oscar telecast and went to see the Magnetic Fields at Town Hall. Stephin Merritt writes wonderful songs. Here he is singing one of them:
Yesterday's NY Times Metro section featured a great article on WFMU. Go read it, and then go over to their site and give them all your money. If you call this evening (and several evenings to follow) you just might have the extra bonus of me taking your pledge. Fair warning- I will try to upsell you. Because that's how I do. And because they deserve it.

Snow!
Finally! I love my neighborhood in the snow. It's prettier and quieter. People smile and say hello. And not just the people with dogs. Everybody. It's like Jersey City turns into Bedford Falls or something.

Julie Christie, the Rumors are True...
This morning, rather than taking the subway like the perpetually late for work person that I am, I walked to my office from the PATH train. I swung my purse around and pretended I was Julie Christie in Billy Liar. I hummed Yo La Tengo's Tom Courtenay. I saw ABBA graffiti on West Houston Street. It was fun.

Then, because I was feeling good about excercise, I decided to reward myself by stopping at Jamba Juice for a smoothie. I added a Green Caffeine energy boost. This was a mistake. 7 hours later, I'm still feeling unfocused and jittery. Should have learned from Colleen...

It isn't all crashed cars over here
Please watch this very funny sketch (Super Liza!) written by the very funny Julie Klausner and Jackie Clarke. And if you pay close attention, you can see both me and Julie's dad in the audience.
When you are finished with that, go vote for Colleen & Tom to win free wedding photos. They deserve it. (Breaking news! They won!)

Things I Learned From the Police Report
In addition to driving with a revoked license, the dude who killed my car was driving a car that was registered to someone else. Which sucks for her, because I think that makes her responsible, from an insurance standpoint. And like Milli Vanilli did before him, he blames the accident on the rain. 'Cause the rain don't care.
And on Friday, my insurance company confirmed that the damages constitute a total loss. Which I knew would happen. But still.

Farewell, Little Honda.
Yesterday, I left my apartment to find a note from the JCPD stuck in my mailbox. It read, "Your car was totaled in accident. It was towed to Jack's Towing. Call them!"
Insane!!! Here's what I was able to salvage:

Yes, those are tapes. There's also a kazoo in there somewhere. Note to Beth & Steve- I crawled through broken glass to save that foam finger. I love you guys that much.
I'm trying to look on the bright side- I wasn't in the car when it happened. I don't drive on a daily basis, so it's not like I can't get to work or anything. But I've had the car for 10 years. In that time, I've had 6 addresses, but the Honda was a constant. I'm going to miss her. A lot.
I was completely confused. How could my car have been totaled when it was parked? It wasn't even near the corner! The folks at Jack's were kind enough to explain it to me. Apparently, during the horrendous rainstorm on Friday, a minivan smashed into the Ford Escape that was parked BEHIND mine. The force of the impact sent the Escape up over my back bumper and caused this:

Why don't you sing a song about it, Sarah?
Is this the funniest thing Sarah Silverman has ever done? Probably.
