All Tomorrow's Parties

Since I didn't make it up to Monticello, NY this weekend, I've spent a considerable amount of time on my couch listening to WFMU's broadcast of the All Tomorrow's Parties festival.  And it has been fantastic.

I was lucky enough to spin a mini-set from the studio between Thee Silver Mount Zion Orchestra and Lightning Bolt's sets.  Here's what I played:

Brazilian Girls- Losing Myself
Strangelets- Riot on Planet 10
Shellac- Steady As She Goes
Tortoise- Glass Museum
Portastatic- Josephine

I yammered on for a bit about Steve Albini the Card Sharp, and DJ Daniel Blumin & I equated Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine with Tinkerbell-  If clap hard enough, maybe he'll let WFMU broadcast his set!  So start clapping, folks...

My weekend in Richmond

Last weekend, I learned some valuable lessons.   It's cheaper & faster to fly to Richmond than it is to take a train or rent a car.   And people do not start chants at 5 and Under soccer games.  My bro-in-law and I tried, in vain, to get the spectators to join us in shouting "Goooooooaaaaaallllll!  Ole, ole, ole, ole..."  but all we got were puzzled looks.

Also, the supermarkets down there have child-sized shopping carts, which allow you to create tableaus such as this*:

Other highlights?  Capital Ale House, AKA Beer Heaven.

*Please note, even though he's a big boy of 5, we did not let him indulge.

If the real thing won't do the trick...

When Barracuda started playing after John McCain's speech last night, my thoughts went like this: "Ooh! Barracuda!"

Then: "Crap! Are Heart Republicans? Lame!!"

And then I went and listened to Dreamboat Annie.

Apparently, the Wilson sisters were none too happy about their song's prominent placement. They issued a cease & desist letter to the McCain-Palin campaign!
